LMBPrimary bite

Has a chance to cause fractures on hit. The larger the target, the more bites it takes to trigger a fracture. Smaller targets fracture faster with fewer bites.

fracture chance
Alt + LMBDirectional bite

Steers the bite in a specific direction. Costs 2% stamina. Fully usable in water. Same fracture rules as primary bite.

RMBMuzzle swing

Light head sweep. Knocks down smaller targets. Directional version available with Alt + RMB.

knockdown (small)
Hold RMBHeavy muzzle swing

Charged head swing. Knocks down targets up to 0.75× Rex's weight. Staggers same-size animals. Can outright kill smaller targets.

knockdownstagger
Crouch + Alt + RMBFriendly shove

A shove performed by crouching and using the directional muzzle swing. Deals 20 damage — enough to kill very small targets and deal meaningful damage to fresh spawn juveniles. Can be used to playfully mess with a teammate, or practically to knock a smaller teammate free from a pin by an Omniraptor or Allosaurus.

Hold LMBCrush

Rex charges forward with a powerful lunging bite that deals fracture damage on impact. Targets that are low on stamina, health, or blood are pinned much more easily. Pins and executes targets under half Rex's weight. Staggers similar-size animals. Press R or look behind you to cancel mid-charge.

Crush miss penalty

Whiffing Crush stuns you for 1 second with a 5-second cooldown before you can use it again. In any duel this is a free punish window for your opponent. Never throw Crush without a clear read on your target.

Spacebar (while running)Ambush

Unlocks at 50% growth (subadult). Grants a temporary sprint speed burst. No additional stamina cost to activate, but stamina is consumed during the burst itself. Goes on a 1-minute cooldown when depleted. Use it to close distance at the start of a fight — not to chase prey already at full pace with a headstart.

no extra cost to activate stam consumed during burst 1min 30s cooldown
Use your mouse to steer, not A/D. Moving with A/D makes Rex shimmy sideways, keeping you in one spot and leaving you completely exposed. Use W to move forward and your mouse to change direction. This is the foundation of good Rex movement.
Z-walking and crouching recover stamina faster. If you need to recover stam mid-fight without fully retreating, moving in a low crouch or Z-walking drains less stamina and speeds up recovery compared to sprinting. This is especially useful after taking a heavy hit from a Stego — if you cannot afford to sit down, Z-walking is a better option than regular walking to slow your bleed rate and buy time.
Place your back to solid cover. Rocks, walls, and water behind you prevent tail-riding and flanking. When fighting multiple opponents, protecting your rear is more valuable than maximizing your own attack angles. Find cover before committing to a fight if possible.
Control terrain before engaging. Rex is slow to reposition once a fight starts. Pick your ground first — open flat terrain works in your favor since the opponent cannot use the environment to get behind you easily.
Target low-resource opponents for Crush. Targets low on stamina, health, or blood are pinned by Crush much more easily. Bait an opponent into burning their stamina before committing Crush and your pin chance goes up significantly.
Never let a downed opponent recover. Rex regen is strongest while sitting. If your target is trying to sit and heal, close in and interrupt it. Giving a free regen window can turn a won fight into a losing one.
Fractures change the fight immediately. A fractured leg removes an opponent's ability to move and turn properly. Once you land one, press the advantage — don't back off and let them limp to cover.
Watch your stamina as much as your opponent's. Rex has limited stamina and slow regen while moving. Blowing it all on a missed Crush leaves you stunned and drained. Pace your aggression.

Auto-triggers on contact

Sparring mode activates automatically when you attack another T-Rex or Triceratops. You enter a dedicated duel state with modified physics and different input behavior. You cannot opt out once it starts.

Spacebar to sidestep

During sparring, pressing Spacebar jumps you to the side instead of triggering Ambush. This is your primary evasion tool. Use it to dodge incoming Crush attempts and reposition off your opponent's flank. Time it to the start of the lunge animation.

Hold LMB to redirect and stun

Holding LMB and looking left or right changes your direction and can stun the target. You can also move side to side past other players by using A/D + Spacebar together to step around them during sparring.

Weight thresholds for sparring

To shove a full prime Trike or Rex in a spar you need to be at least 11.2 tons. To stun them with a heavy muzzle swing or Crush you need to reach 11.7 tons. Below these thresholds your attacks will not connect on heavier targets in sparring mode.

1 Enter the fight at full health. Rex vs Rex is a damage race with near-identical stats. Showing up at 80% health is already behind before the first hit lands. Hunt, recover, then engage.
2 Bait their Crush first. Crush drains stamina whether it hits or not, and a missed Crush stuns them for 1 second. Force your opponent to commit Crush before you do.
3 Protect your flank. Rex has poor turn radius when stationary — but when walking or running, Rex actually has excellent turn radius, only beaten by Omniraptor and Ceratosaurus. An opponent who gets behind you while you are standing still lands repeated free bites. Use rocks, water, and treelines to cut off the angles, and keep moving to use your turning advantage.
5 Land Crush to fracture legs. Standard bites need multiple hits to fracture an equal-weight Rex. Crush does it in one hit. A fractured leg removes their turn ability and prevents them from using their alt attack — it is effectively a kill confirm if you press immediately.
6 Never let them sit to recover. Rex regen is strongest while sitting. The moment your opponent tries to sit, close in and interrupt it. Giving free regen windows in a matched fight is how you throw a win.

Win condition

Land Crush cleanly, fracture a leg, then press the advantage while they cannot turn or alt attack. Everything else is setup for that moment. If you get the fracture and immediately back off, you have thrown it.

Honest caveat

Rex vs Rex has the highest variance of any apex duel in Evrima. Both animals are statistically identical — whoever lands Crush first and gets the leg fracture frequently wins regardless of skill. These tactics improve your odds but do not eliminate variance. Avoiding Rex vs Rex entirely is often the right call.

Stay crouched outside combat. Reduces footprint noise, scent trail, and visual profile. Only stand during an active chase or fight.
Use the silent talking tech. Rex's vocalizations are loud and can give away your position or alert nearby prey. To talk in chat more quietly, sit down, type your message, hit Enter, then immediately stand back up. Note: you are only quiet within a small radius — players further away can still hear you. The sit/stand method is more reliable than other techniques as the game is less likely to trigger a location-revealing vocalization.
Do not broadcast your location. Spamming calls as Rex makes you a target for every pack and rival apex on the server. You are already a high-value kill — don't add a beacon.
Hunt when stomach is at two thirds. Don't wait until starving. Desperation forces bad engagements. Stay topped off so you can disengage and wait without starvation cornering you.
Know your safe weight thresholds around water. At 6.8 tons, Deinosuchus can no longer grab you while you are drinking — you can safely drink at the water's edge. At 10.5 tons, you can swim freely without any risk of being grabbed by a Deino at all.
Know two water sources. Predictable routes get you killed. A backup water location means a rival camping your usual spot doesn't strand you.
Use day and night strategically. Daytime is better for hunting and eating — you can see threats coming while stationary at a kill, which is when you are most vulnerable. That said, nighttime is actually better for traveling. Moving at night gives you more cover and makes you harder to spot. The tradeoff is visibility cuts both ways during the day: you can see threats easier, but they can see you just as well.
Don't be greedy. Greed is the number one killer of Rex. Whether that's staying on a kill too long or pressing a fight past the point you should have left — learn when to back away. Know when to disengage from food and when to disengage from combat. Don't press your luck.
Log out in dense cover. Don't log off in the open or near watering holes. Find cover before going offline so you don't log back in surrounded.
Stage 1 — Juvenile (25%–40%): During your first 3 to 4 hours of Rex, prioritize one thing only: staying away from everyone else. No other juvenile dino gets the kill-on-sight treatment that baby Rexes do, and for good reason. Find a secluded area with safe water and food nearby and stay there. You are not a threat to anything meaningful yet.
Stage 2 — Peak speed (40%–45%): This is your fastest and most untouchable window. Speed rises from around 51 km/h at 40% to 57.3 km/h at 45%. Almost nothing can catch you and starvation is barely a concern. Use this window to relocate to a comfortable growth spot and complete your prime tasks. Gallis and Carnos can still be a problem if spotted, but you have the agility to escape. If you haven't settled on a growth spot yet, now is the time — you're going to be sitting around a lot after this.
Stage 3 — The humbling (45%–60%): This is where many Rexes die. Between 45% and 50% your weight jumps from around 900 kg to 2.8 tons and your speed drops to 35 km/h. Play this stage exactly like a young juvenile — stay hidden, only leave cover for food and water. A group of Ceratos can kill you. A single prime Allo can drop you under 4 tons. Most herbivores outside of a Trike can outrun you. From 50% to 75% your speed continues dropping from 35 km/h down to around 30 km/h. A peak prime Rex sprints at nearly 34 km/h — meaning they are faster than you for most of this stage. You are not the apex right now. Act like it.
Stage 4 — Finding your footing (60%–70%): Now you can start playing like a proper Rex. At 5.1 tons you get heavy footsteps, making crouching necessary to hunt. Avoid hotspots still, but quieter areas are fair game. Set up ambushes near bait — place a kill next to bush cover that hides you from all sides and gives you a clear view of what approaches. If something you cannot handle comes by, stay hidden and let them take the bait. Keep your hunger topped up because the next stage demands a lot of food.
Stage 5 — The real game (70%–100%): If you made it here, you know how to grow a Rex. Now comes the hard part. An 8+ ton Rex cannot be properly fed by body drops and small dinos alone — it buys you time, nothing more. You now need to hunt bigger prey. Delta, Highlands, and West Rail are your most consistent areas. Stealth remains critical. The higher your hunger when entering a hotspot, the more time you have to wait for the right opportunity. Do not rush in desperate. Focus on heavily traveled chokepoints like bridges and drinking spots, use bush geometry to your advantage, and treat every engagement as a calculated decision.

Note on mutations

Rex mutations in Evrima are tied to diet balance and nutrient thresholds over time. Keeping a well-rounded diet across all three nutrient types consistently is the foundation. Specific unlock conditions are still being documented by the community as the system evolves with patches.

Efficient Digestionsustain

Your food drains more slowly. Rex already hungers fast — this buys you significantly more time between hunts, letting you stay hidden longer and pick your fights rather than being forced into bad engagements by starvation.

Epidermal Fibrosisdefense

Increases bleed resistance. Reduces how quickly bleed stacks up in extended fights, covering one of Rex's biggest soft weaknesses when trading hits.

Osteosclerosisdefense

Gives you a chance to resist or reduce fracture damage. Fractures are the primary way other Rexes can shut you down in a fight. This doesn't make you immune but meaningfully reduces the chance that a single Crush ends the engagement in your opponent's favor.

Multichambered Lungsstamina

Decreases the stamina threshold required before recovery kicks in, meaning you start recovering stamina sooner. Does not increase your total stamina capacity. Most useful in Rex vs Rex scenarios — whether you are chasing one down or trying to disengage and escape one that is after you.

Why this build works

This combination covers Rex's core weaknesses across the board. Efficient Digestion reduces survival pressure between hunts. Epidermal Fibrosis cuts bleed buildup. Osteosclerosis reduces fracture risk in duels. Multichambered Lungs extends your stamina so you can stay in fights longer and recover faster between exchanges.

Rex cannot eat bones. Don't waste time on remains that won't give nutrition.

Why watch streamers

Watching experienced Rex players is one of the fastest ways to improve. You'll pick up positioning habits, combat decision-making, and survival instincts that are hard to learn from text alone. Pay attention to how they move, when they choose to engage, and when they walk away.
